A long time has passed since my last post, I know. I'm now ready to unveil some great news: I'm an Ambassador for the latest Microsoft Campaign.
I'm very excited about this and the next few months are going to be a real adventure...
I shall be shooting some brand new works for Microsoft, starting next week!
I'll try to keep you updated as much as I can.

on behalf of the extraordinary cast and crew that allowed me to get such a great result, I inform you that Vampyre Compendium has been selected for the 2011 David di Donatello Awards, which means ITALIAN OSCARS. The category is Best Short Film.

PEACE RIOT - my new short film and the story behind it
My latest short film finally 'landed' on the web!
It's called PEACE RIOT and it was produced by the Piedmont Region in partnership with the Social Services of the City of Turin. It came out of a wider project called Conosciamoci e facciamoci conoscere (Let's know each other and make the others know us), which required the direct involvment of kids from local high schools and Youth social centres. I thought the title of the campaign had to become the philosophy of this experience: the crew of young and valiant professionals and the group of kids know each other and together they give birth to a short film that allows them to be known by others, that is to say an audience (as wide as possible). I wrote the story and involved the kids as actors. Some didn't want to appear in front of the camera, thus they became on set assistants.
The first step - knowing each other - was a genuine adventure: together with Dario Cucco (a pedagogic consultant who is also a professional clown) I met with the kids and told them what a film set works like and what a director does. Some of my brilliant collaborators came along and did the same (you can find them all in the credits: wonderful, wonderful professionals and human beings).
Once on set, the kids discovered what making a movie really meant: the long pauses, the constant repetitions, the tricks behind atmospheric effects were all revealed at once.
Some of them got excited and some others got bored, but by the end of the last day of shooting (which also fit with the "grand finale" in the story) everybody went home with big smiles on their faces.
The secon and last step - be known by a wide audience - is happening now: the result of such a peculiar adventure can be seen here.
I can tell you I conceived this short as a journey through adolescence, but I really want everybody to see (and find) their own story while watching it.
All I can say is that I concentrated a lot on colours, which I always do in my works. They are useful to portray stories and characters, and especially what is harder to show on film: the mood.
Peace Riot is certainly no exception to this; but whether it represents personal growth, the difficulty of feeling alone and misunderstood until one discovers the power of the group, the devastating and "clean" energy of kids, or something else...well, I would like to leave all of this up to the spectator.

New Year, Great News...
The New Year just started and it couldn't start better! Great things are going to happen and I am terribly excited about the new adventure I'm going to be part of...
I'll tell more soon.

Let's start with the last Venice Film Festival: my short film "Vampyre Compendium" was invited to be presented there out of competition. The event was called "The Cinema Meets the Music" and Maestro Michele Placido (who sponsored the short) was there with me to present the film. It all took place on September 8th 2010.

Vampyre Compendium
The short Vampyre Compendium has finally been completed. I am very proud of the result, and now it's ready to be shown in festivals worldwide.
It stars actors Oona Chaplin and Vincent Montuel and it's an ironic take on old-school vampire stories. If you're looking for Twilight, this is the wrong choice. The classics from Universal and Hammer studios are the actual source of inspiration for this short movie which got the attention of famed Italian actor-director Michele Placido, who patronized the project.
The crew was young and talented, and I finally got exactly what I wanted. I want to thank them all for the great amount of effort and talent they put in it.

In spite of the many (technical) difficulties we had on the set of L'anno del temporale (The Year of the Storm), what comes out from the photos downhere is fun. And a relaxed - though phisically limited - environment.

L'Anno del Temporale - Storyboards (partially) revealed
Here thee are a few drawings from the storyboards of my last music video.
I already spoke about it a few times, and I thought it's now time to reveal a bit of it.
Considering the song is about a youthful love story described as a storm, I decided to keep the typical elements of a storm as characters.
All I can add is that there is a tiny theatre, the band (La Bottega di Musica e Parole, Warner Chappell)is occupying its backstage and there's also a small group of valiant theatre workers. And yes, there is the love story too, as the song requires...

Wired Magazine!
Something very cool just happened and it's fresh news: the May issue of the Italian version of Wired Magazine published a full page article about me, calling me the "Next Big Thing". I can only say: "Wow!"... And also thanks to journalist Marco Rossari for such a nice review of myself and my work (both past, current and future projects) and to photographer Giovanni Troilo, who made an amazing job (as you can see below)!

Some good news mixed with recent memories
I can now say the music video for the band La Bottega di Musica e Parole is coming out. Finally!
I still don't know the exact date, but the band will present it officially around mid-May.
The video was shot right before Christmas break inside a tiny theatre, while outside an authentic snow storm was taking place. The song to the music video is actually titled "L'anno del temporale" ( The Year of the Storm, in English), but it's more of a late summer-autumnish kind of storm it tells about. So nothing of the pandemonium happening outside could end up being used in and for the video.
We had some sort of trouble getting out of there though: snow and freeze had made the stairs so slippery that moving outside the set at the end of the day became a real journey back home...

Two brand new works!
So...I disappeared for two months but I have plenty to tell. Though now I have to keep it short: in between December and January I shot a new music video (the anticipated L'anno del temporale) which is now ready, and a short film currently in post-production, whose working title is Vampyre Compendium and starring actors Oona Chaplin (Quantum of Solace) and Vincent Montuel (Molière). I am very happy of them both!
The music video tells about an impossible love story happening inside a little theatre and the short film is about...well...vampires, of course! Nothing to do with the Twilight ones, though: it actually revives the good old Victorian atmosphere of old school movies and of the XIX century novels of the genre....with irony and a few twists. So get prepared to see cobwebs, Victorian laces and long black cloacks!
Soon will come photos from the sets as well as a few drawings from the storyboards.

Back from an intense period
Here I am! Back again!
November has been quite a tough month, but worth it.
I had to shoot (and have been working quite hard on)a music video for the Italian band La Bottega di Musica e Parole, but we finally had to postpone the dates. Now the shooting will take place on the 19th and 20th of December, right before Christmas holidays.
The famous Turin Film Festival just took place and I had the chance to watch some great movies: first of all a restored copy of the fabulous "Red Shoes" by Powell and Pressburger, then I managed to get a ticket for the FANTASTIC "Fantastic Mr. Fox". It's a great film and Wes Anderson loves playing with old-style stop motion graphics and animations. It's pure delight for your eyes and brains, and I higly recommend it!
Now it's time to get back to work. I'm currently scouting new locations for the video as well as for a short film I'll be shooting at the beginning of January.

Some news
Ok, I've been away for a while. But I've been quite busy and I still am. I'm in the middle of the preparation of a music video I have to shoot by the end of the week. The band is Italian and is called La Bottega di Musica e Parole. The song I'm working on is called L'anno del temporale (The year of the storm), and you can listen to it right here.
The whole idea I am working on is quite surreal: my costume designer and my art director are already very excited about the project (I fear they will have A LOT of work to do on this one)and I'm sure it's going to be great fun.
The crew will be pretty much the same I had on The Devil's Hand: that was the first time I was working with most of those guys, but it came out as a really good group. Plus the atmosphere on set was great. I can't wait!
Besides, post-production (mostly colour correction) on The Devil's Hand almost came to an end. Which means the official launch of the video is probably going to happen soon. Stay tuned!

Devil's Hand: a few anticipations...

New music video coming soon...
I recently wrote about a music video I shot just a few weeks ago and I defined it "halloweenesque". I called it that way because I got inspired by gothic tales and imagery while preparing the mood board and the storyboard.
The video is made to the song "Devil's Hand" by Italian (but English-singing) band The Scrabble. It is their first music video and I think they are a really good band. Listen to their tracks following the link above, then let me know what you think.
The text of the song tells about a poker game from one player's perspective: I based my concept on the idea of having the singer play opposite a very ...ehm...special player. I can add I had fun taking the song's title quite literally...

Today the magazine Next Exit officially presented their last effort: "Young Blood - 2008", a yearbook containing the profiles of 190 young Italian artists who received honors and prizes in the Arts all over the world. And I'm one of them!
The launch of the volume took place in Rome at the Ministry of Youth.
An article about the event came out today on the first page (!) of one of Italy's prominent newspapers, "Il Corriere della Sera". If you can read Italian, here's the link... and I have the honor and the privilege to be the first to be named in the article (out of 7 young artists chosen by the journalist to represent the whole group contained in the volume)!
Today is a very nice day indeed...
